Luke, Chapter 11

Welcome to week eleven of Luke/Acts 2020. I'm so glad you're here! This week our structure is the same as Week Ten: 1) I give an introduction to the reading. 2) There's a recording of me reading the chapter. 3) Followed by questions and an explanation. 4) I'll post a hymn that you can read. 5) And we'll close with a prayer. Easy-peasy. If you have a Bible, great. Open it to Luke, chapter eleven. If not, you can find Luke chapter eleven online. Let's get started!
1) Introduction: After the Seventy-Two were sent out in Chapter Ten, Chapter Eleven begins with prayer: Jesus taught his disciples how to pray, and he faced more opposition, as well. So let's take a look.

3) Explanation & Questions: Did anything strike you while reading? If so, what? In Chapter Nine, Jesus told his disciples that he was going to Jerusalem to die and rise (Luke 9:21-22). In Chapter Eleven, we see the tension building: if Jesus continues speaking, he's going to get himself killed! In this case, he calls out the hypocrisy of the religious leaders at that time, targeting the Pharisees and lawyers, and they were NOT happy with his assessment of them.

4) Hymn: Here's the hymn "Be Still, My Soul." Click to listen, and the lyrics are below if you'd like to sing or read. Pardon my errors in singing. There are several!

Be still, my soul; the Lord is on your side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to your God to order and provide;
In ev'ry change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul; your best, your heav'nly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
Be still, my soul; your God will undertake
To guide the future as He has the past.
Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul; the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.
Be still, my soul; though dearest friends depart
And all is darkened in this vale of tears;
Then you will better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe your sorrows and your fears.
Be still, my soul; your Jesus can repay
From His own fullness all He takes away.
Be still, my soul; the hour is hast'ning on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul; when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to your God to order and provide;
In ev'ry change He faithful will remain.

5) Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for teaching your disciples how to pray and for encouraging persistence in prayer: we ask that you grant us your Holy Spirit so that we can be more in-tune with your heart. Thank you for healing the mute man in Chapter Eleven. While some marveled at this exorcism, others aligned you with Satan, and some failed to trust in you by seeking a sign. Thank you for reminding us that, "Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!" In likeness, help us to keep your word. In Jesus', name, we pray, Amen.
Disclaimer: I should mention that I do not have copyright permission regarding the particular Bible I'm using. I'm reading an ESV edition in this recording. Most of the hymns I choose are in the public domain.
