Luke, Chapter 10
Welcome to week ten of Luke/Acts 2020! Our structure is the same as week nine: 1) I give an introduction to the reading, 2) there's a recording of me reading the chapter, 3) followed by questions & an explanation; 4) I'll post a hymn that you can read if you'd like, and 5) we'll close with a prayer. If you have a Bible, open it to Luke, chapter ten. If not, you can find Luke chapter ten online. Let's get started! And if you have questions or thoughts at the end, leave a comment or send me an email.
1) Introduction: We aren't quite halfway through the book of Luke. In two more chapters, we will be! But in the last study, we turned a corner: Jesus began prepping the disciples for his death and resurrection. In chapter ten, like nine, Jesus sends out more disciples for kingdom preaching and healing. Let's take a look.
2) Recording: Here is a recording of Luke, chapter ten.

3) Explanation & Questions: How is this study so far impacting you? What from God's word is hitting you? It's perhaps hard to see, but there is a lot of JOY in chapter ten. The disciples are excited about the work they were sent out to do, and Jesus was rejoicing over the kingdom's proclamation. While still being tested by certain doubters, Jesus told Martha, "there is only one thing necessary." For digging deeper, see my Google Doc that discusses specific verses and terms. Be sure to scroll down to chapter ten.
4) Hymn: Here is the hymn "Rejoice, My Heart, Be Glad and Sing." The lyrics are below if you'd like to read along :)

Rejoice, my heart, be glad and sing,
A cheerful trust maintain;
For God, the source of ev'rything,
Your portion shall remain.
He is your treasure, He your joy,
Your life and light and Lord,
Your counselor when doubts annoy,
Your shield and great reward.
Why spend the day in blank despair,
In restless thought the night?
On your Creator cast your care;
He makes your burdens light.
Did not His love and truth and pow'r
Guard ev'ry childhood day?
And did He not in threat'ning hour
Turn dreaded ills away?
He only will with patience chide,
His rod falls gently down;
And all your sins He casts aside
In ocean depths to drown.
His wisdom never plans in vain
Nor falters nor mistakes.
All that His counsels may ordain
A blessed ending makes.
Upon your lips, then, lay your hand,
And trust His guiding love;
Then like a rock your peace shall stand
Here and in heav'n above.
A cheerful trust maintain;
For God, the source of ev'rything,
Your portion shall remain.
He is your treasure, He your joy,
Your life and light and Lord,
Your counselor when doubts annoy,
Your shield and great reward.
Why spend the day in blank despair,

On your Creator cast your care;
He makes your burdens light.

And all your sins He casts aside
In ocean depths to drown.

Nor falters nor mistakes.

Here and in heav'n above.
5) Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for sending out the seventy-two. Thank you for giving them power by your Spirit to preach about the kingdom and to heal. We earnestly pray for more laborers in your field--for surely, even today, the harvest is plentiful. Thank you for the joy that Jesus felt at the preaching of Your word. Please help us to be a loving neighbor like the good Samaritan. And help us not to be anxious, but to listen to you and to find comfort in what you have to say. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
Disclaimer: I should mention I do not have copyright permission regarding the particular Bible I'm using. I am reading an ESV edition in this recording. The majority of hymns I choose are in the public domain as this one is, and I reference the Lutheran Service Book a lot. If you'd like to follow me and learn more about what I do, especially dance-wise, you can find me on Facebook, Instagram & YouTube. I will be posting these devotions each Friday, throughout the year 2020. May they be a blessing to you! Enjoy the journey! Have a wonderful week. -Tessa
