Luke, Chapter 10

Welcome to week ten of Luke/Acts 2020. I'm so glad you're here! This week our structure is the same as Week Nine: 1) I give an introduction to the reading. 2) There's a recording of me reading the chapter. 3) Followed by questions and an explanation. 4) I'll post a hymn that you can read. 5) And we'll close with a prayer. Easy-peasy. If you have a Bible, great. Open it to Luke, chapter ten. If not, you can find Luke chapter ten online. Let's get started!
1) Introduction: We're nearly halfway through the book of Luke. Can you believe it?! In two more chapters, we will be. In the last study, we turned a corner. This is because Jesus began to prepare his disciples for his death and resurrection. Like Chapter Nine, in ten, Jesus sends out more disciples for kingdom preaching and healing. He sends out seventy-two, in fact! Let's take a look.
2) Recording: Here's a recording of Luke, Chapter Ten. You can click and listen, or read along.

3) Explanation & Questions: How is this study of Luke/Acts 2020 so far impacting you? What from God's word is hitting you and transforming you? It's perhaps difficult to see, but there is a lot of JOY in Chapter Ten. The disciples were excited about the work they were sent out to do, and Jesus rejoiced over the kingdom's proclamation. Jesus was still being tested by certain leaders at this time, but he told Martha, "there is only one thing necessary."

4) Hymn: Here's the hymn "Rejoice, My Heart, Be Glad and Sing." Click to listen, and the lyrics are below if you'd like to read.

Rejoice, my heart, be glad and sing,
A cheerful trust maintain;
For God, the source of ev'rything,
Your portion shall remain.
He is your treasure, He your joy,
Your life and light and Lord,
Your counselor when doubts annoy,
Your shield and great reward.
Why spend the day in blank despair,
In restless thought the night?
On your Creator cast your care;
He makes your burdens light.
Did not His love and truth and pow'r
Guard ev'ry childhood day?
And did He not in threat'ning hour
Turn dreaded ills away?
He only will with patience chide,
His rod falls gently down;
And all your sins He casts aside
In ocean depths to drown.
His wisdom never plans in vain
Nor falters nor mistakes.
All that His counsels may ordain
A blessed ending makes.
Upon your lips, then, lay your hand,
And trust His guiding love;
Then like a rock your peace shall stand
Here and in heav'n above.
Note: This hymn could be hurtful for those who've had a difficult childhood.
If so, I mourn and grieve, and may God restore us in every way. Amen.

5) Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for sending out the Seventy-Two. Thank you for giving them power to preach about your kingdom and to heal. We pray for more laborers in your field. Surely, even today, the harvest is plentiful and there are still willing workers. We thank you that Jesus felt joy at the preaching of the word, and we ask that you help us to be loving neighbors and to not be anxious but find comfort in sitting at your feet as Mary did. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
Disclaimer: I should mention that I do not have copyright permission regarding the particular Bible I'm using. I'm reading an ESV edition in this recording. Most of the hymns I choose are in the public domain.
