Tessa's Personal Goals as an Artist
My goals are many. I have overall goals for "Inner Reformation." But I also have personal goals as an artist.
First of all, it's important that I tell you that I have a degree in dance performance, a degree in theology, and lots of practical experience in the home. This means that I have connections in all of these different communities. And thus, I see that I have three audiences: those closest to me, the Church, & the arts culture/dance community. I seek to utilize all of my skills in dance, theology, & in being a wife/mother in the making of dance. But I must do all of this in a very thoughtful way, for to reach all three audiences mentioned is no simple task.
I will elaborate:
My family is my biggest goal. In my effort to make this dance for them, I cannot lose sight of them. So I have to learn ways to balance all that I do. Furthermore, in addition to my dance I eventually hope to leave other resources for them (i.e. a written autobiography).
My next audience, the Church, may be a tough audience, because my work may challenge them. I may make them uncomfortable. They may not understand all that I do (for I am an artist afterall). As I received a seminary education, I hope to pass on what knowledge I gained (i.e. creating a website dedicated to theology for the layperson).
The third audience is, in some ways, my most exciting endeavor. I actually feel tons of passion regarding this audience, because I find them inspiring. Furthermore, I love what I'm doing; I love moving my body & using my mind to analyze, make, & share dance. In short, I hope to offer to the dance community myself (i.e. in the way of creating dance, teaching, writing & collaborating).
Overall, my personal, artistic goal is: to make dance that is accessible for the layperson, but that is respected by the professional. I seek this in my home, in the Church, and in the dance community.
In the end (after a very long career in the arts), I hope to have created one powerful story, a lasting work of art, a legacy. I do not know how I will exactly impact the artistic dance culture, how I may impact future generations, or how I may impact theological thought, but I do know that I long to leave an impression. While I can aim carefully towards my three audiences, I cannot control all outcomes. But I do feel hopeful that I am putting things in place to leave a mark--of love, devotion, and beauty.
Or another way of stating my goal is: through the telling of my story & dedication of my life, I hope to impact future generations, the theology and practice of the church, and to leave a loving & lasting imprint on dance as an art form.
I'm certain I will develop about a million other goals along the way, but as an artist, overall this is my aim.
Signed,
Tessa
P.S. All of this seems impossible. I know! But I know Somebody who deals with the impossible.
