Welcome to week thirteen of Luke/Acts 2020. I'm so glad you're here! This week our structure is the same as Week Twelve: 1) I give an introduction to the reading. 2) There's a recording of me reading the chapter. 3) Followed by questions and an explanation. 4) I'll post a hymn that you can read. 5) And we'll close with a prayer. Easy-peasy. If you have a Bible, great. Open it to Luke, chapter thirteen. If not, you can find Luke chapter thirteen online here. Let's get started!
1) Introduction: Hi, everyone, let's dig right in. If you'd like to cross yourself and do an Invocation (calling upon God's name) at the beginning of this study, please do! "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen." In Luke 12, Jesus was further preparing his disciples for his death. He wanted them not to fear, but to know that God would indeed help them and be with them. Jesus especially desired that his disciples proclaim his name after his death and resurrection and told them not to be anxious, but to seek the kingdom of God FIRST. Furthermore, he tried to prepare them for his second coming. Overall, his words gave guidance, but also a lot of comfort. Thus, in Luke 13, we again are reminded that Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem to die and rise. So let's take a look!

3) Explanation & Questions: We are now officially over half-way through Luke's Gospel. Wow! That's an incredible accomplishment because many people have never read an entire Gospel. So, look at you! You're well on your way. Good job! By the way, what did you think of this week's reading? Do you have any thoughts regarding it? Jesus was, and is, highly interested in repentance. Perhaps you've noticed that by reading Luke's Gospel. Remember, repentance means "to turn." So literally, it refers to unbelief and turning from unbelief to faith in God. In fact, it's a matter of changing one's mind and heart and involves both our belief and our practice (i.e., how we think and how we live). In this chapter, specifically, we see a healing performed by Jesus, and we learn that Christ is the door to salvation.

4) Hymn: Here's the hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." The lyrics are below if you'd like to read.

What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry Ev'rything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit; Oh, what needless pain we bear--
All because we do not carry Ev'rything to God in prayer.
Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged-- Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our ev'ry weakness-- Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Are we weak and heavy laden, Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge-- Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer.
In His arms He'll take and shield thee; Thou wilt find a solace there.

5) Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for preaching about repentance. Sometimes it can be hard to hear that, but thank you. We also thank you for healing the woman, who had a disabling spirit for 18 years, and that she and others were HAPPY about this miracle done by you. You freed her! Thank you that Luke records that you are the door to salvation, and we especially thank you for journeying towards Jerusalem to die. We pray that you bring many to repentance in our lifetimes and that you please heal our burdens and bring us to repentance. Lastly, thank you for granting us eternity through your death and resurrection! We love you, Lord. Help us to shine YOU, but also to be comforted by your promises to us and your love for us. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
P.S. Here's a video I made in 2020 when I first wrote this study on Luke 13. It was inspired by the coronavirus and my grief regarding my own personal life at that time. This piece is titled "Rose Petals." I hope it is a blessing to you! -Tessa
