Welcome to week five of Luke/Acts 2020. I'm so glad you're here! This week our structure is the same as Week Four: 1) I give an introduction to the reading. 2) There's a recording of me reading the chapter. 3) Followed by questions and an explanation. 4) I'll post a hymn that you can read. 5) And we'll close with a prayer. Easy-peasy. If you have a Bible, great. Open it to Luke, chapter five. If not, you can find Luke chapter five online. Here we go!
1) Introduction: In Chapter Four, we just learned that Jesus was sent to preach about the kingdom of God. In Chapter Five, we see him doing this very thing: we read about him preaching from a boat! In this chapter, specifically, he calls his first disciples to follow him and he heals many, but he still faces opposition as he begins his ministry. So let's take a look.
2) Recording: Here's a recording of Luke, chapter five. Enjoy!

3) Explanation & Questions: What stood out to you from today’s reading? Did anything seem new or confusing? In Chapter Five, Luke tells us about how Jesus called his first disciples, and how they left everything to follow him. Luke also tells us about Jesus curing a leper, and how, by healing a person with paralysis, Christ proved that he has authority on earth to forgive sins. What's more, when questioned by religious leaders, Jesus made it unmistakably clear that he came to call sinners to repentance.

4) Hymn: Here's a reading of the hymn "Hail to the Lord's Anointed." The lyrics are below if you'd like to read.

Hail to the Lord's anointed, Great David's greater Son!
Hail, in the time appointed, His reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression, To set the captive free,
To take away transgression And rule in equity.
He comes with rescue speedy To those who suffer wrong,
To help the poor and needy And bid the weak be strong;
To give them songs for sighing, Their darkness turn to light,
Whose souls, condemned and dying, were precious in His sight.
He shall come down like showers Upon the fruitful earth;
Love, joy, and hope, like flowers, Spring in His path to birth.
Before Him on the mountains Shall peace, the herald, go;
And righteousness in fountains From hill to valley flow.
Kings shall fall down before Him And gold and incense bring;
All nations shall adore Him, His praise all people sing.
To Him shall prayer unceasing And daily vows ascend;
His kingdom still increasing, A kingdom without end.
O'er ev'ry foe victorious, He on His throne shall rest,
From age to age more glorious, All blessing and all-blest.
The tide of time shall never His covenant remove;
His name shall stand forever -- That name to us is Love.

5) Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for specifically choosing your disciples. Out of all of the people in the world, you chose them. Furthermore, you acted powerfully and generously in their lives. We thank you for being willing to heal the leper and for forgiving and making well the paralyzed man. What a miracle! All who were there must have been SO happy to witness this. We ask that you consider our deepest cries and needs, as well. We need you today, too, and we pray that you help us to be glad and assured that you have forgiven us by Christ's death on the cross. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
Disclaimer: I should mention that I do not have copyright permission regarding the particular Bible I'm using. I'm reading an ESV edition in this recording. Most of the hymns I choose are in the public domain.
