Inner Reformation: An Autobiography Danced
by Tessa Priem
Welcome, I'm glad you're here! "Inner Reformation" is a real-life story about a girl we'll call Asset (which is Tessa spelled backward). While different dance forms have influenced the making of this production, various kinds of modern dance form it's backbone. However, unlike dance performances that you may have seen "Inner Reformation" features a soloist dancing the entire length of the show: twelve dances long, 57 minutes and 15 seconds.
The creation of this one-woman show began October 31, 2016, and first debuted at the Fringe Festival KC in July 2018. In many respects, it's a unique work of art, for it is an autobiography danced, rather than written. Much of it is danced on the floor or in a chair due to tendinitis of the ankle. In the work throughout, the dancer asks herself the question, "What do you love most?"
Because this is a story told through movement, a synopsis of our dance-story is provided, written by Matt Priem:
"What do you love most?" Almost two years in the making, this one-woman dance in twelve parts is an autobiographical exploration of that question, powerfully portraying themes of relationships and physical and mental health. From beginning to end, the aesthetic and narrative are both profoundly personal and broadly relatable as expressions of human joy, pain, freedom, and hope are shared at the deepest level."
Creating "Inner Reformation: An Autobiography Danced" has been an absolute joy. The dancer wishes to thank all who have made this show possible, in particular Randy Priem, Rheta Priem, Lorrie Milleville, and Matt Priem. This work of art is forever dedicated to the dancer's children and forever danced in honor of the dancer's mother.
I hope you enjoy it,
Tessa Priem
