Luke, Chapter 20
Welcome to week twenty of Luke/Acts 2020. My name is Tessa Priem, and I'm a solo dance artist. I'm also a mommy who studied theology. Thus, for the year of 2020, we're doing a year-long Bible Study. This week, our structure is the same as week nineteen: 1) I give an introduction to the reading, 2) there's a recording of me reading the chapter, 3) followed by questions & an explanation; 4) I'll post a hymn that you can read if you'd like, and 5) we'll close with a prayer. If you have a Bible, please open it to Luke, chapter twenty. If not, you can find Luke twenty online. Let's get started! And if you have questions or thoughts at the end, leave a comment or send me an email. Many blessings!
1) Introduction: Greetings, everyone. We've made it to chapter 20 in Luke's Gospel. After this week, there are four more chapters to go. Remember our last lesson? After several weeks of traveling with Jesus, we finally made it to Jerusalem with him. I wonder what Theophilus was thinking at this point in the writing. Did Theophilus know any of these people that Luke wrote about? Had he already heard some of these stories? Furthermore, how long did it take Luke to write this Gospel, and how many hours of research did he spend in gathering its information? Let's keep reading and consider more.
2) Recording: Here is a recording of Luke, chapter twenty. You can listen to it and follow along, or simply read the chapter on your own.

3) Explanation & Questions: Well, what did you think of Luke 20? How did it hit you? Did you notice any Law in it or Gospel? In chapter 19, we learned that after Jesus entered Jerusalem, after the grand parade of him going through town, he went into the temple. In chapter 20, he continued to make a stir, and the religious authorities wanted to know who gave him permission to be in the temple and teach. After a series of questions by different groups of people, Jesus left them all stumped. Furthermore, he posed some tough questions to them in return. For more information on specific terms & verses, see our Digging Deeper section, where we will go into depth on Luke twenty. Be sure to scroll down to the proper chapter.
4) Hymn: Here is the hymn, "How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds." The lyrics are below if you'd like to read along :)

How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believer's ear!
It soothes our sorrows, heals our wounds,
And drives away our fear.
It makes the wounded spirit whole
And calms the heart's unrest;
'Tis manna to the hungry soul
And to the weary, rest.
Dear name! The rock on which I build,
My shield and hiding place;
My never-failing treasury
filled with boundless stores of grace.
O Jesus, shepherd, guardian, friend,
My Prophet, Priest, and King,
My Lord, my life, my way, my end,
Accept the praise I bring.
In a believer's ear!
It soothes our sorrows, heals our wounds,
And drives away our fear.
It makes the wounded spirit whole
And calms the heart's unrest;
'Tis manna to the hungry soul
And to the weary, rest.
Dear name! The rock on which I build,
My shield and hiding place;
My never-failing treasury
filled with boundless stores of grace.
O Jesus, shepherd, guardian, friend,
My Prophet, Priest, and King,
My Lord, my life, my way, my end,
Accept the praise I bring.
5) Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for preaching the gospel in the temple. Thank you that the people recognized John as a prophet, sent from heaven and that his baptism came from you. Thank you for becoming the cornerstone of the Church; we're sorry that the leaders wanted to reject you. Thank you for being so wise in your answers to their many questions and for being David's Lord. We pray for your continued love and mercy. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
Disclaimer: I should mention I do not have copyright permission regarding the particular Bible I'm using. I am reading an ESV edition in this recording. The majority of hymns I choose are in the public domain as this one is, and I reference the Lutheran Service Book a lot. I will be posting these devotions each Friday, throughout the year 2020. May they be a blessing to you. If you'd like to follow me and learn more about what I do, especially dance-wise, you can find me on Facebook, Instagram & YouTube. Enjoy the journey! Have a wonderful week. -Tessa
