Luke, Chapter 21
Welcome to week twenty-one of Luke/Acts 2020. My name is Tessa Priem, and I'm a solo dance artist. I'm also a mommy who studied theology. Thus, for the year of 2020, we're doing a year-long Bible Study. This week, our structure is the same as week twenty: 1) I give an introduction to the reading, 2) there's a recording of me reading the chapter, 3) followed by questions & an explanation; 4) I'll post a hymn that you can read if you'd like, and 5) we'll close with a prayer. If you have a Bible, please open it to Luke, chapter twenty-one. If not, you can find Luke twenty-one online. Let's get started! And if you have questions or thoughts at the end, leave a comment or send me an email. Many blessings!
1) Introduction: Hello, everyone. Welcome to this week's study of Luke, chapter 21. In week 19 of our study, Jesus entered Jerusalem. Here, in chapter 21, he is still in the same town. In the church year, this is called Holy Week: before Jesus died, he was in the city of Jerusalem for one about week. On a Sunday, he rode into town. On that Tuesday is when the events of Luke 21 took place. Let's take a look!
2) Recording: Here is a recording of Luke, chapter twenty-one. You can listen to it and follow along, or simply read the chapter on your own.

3) Explanation & Questions: What did you think of chapter 21? Were you comforted by specific verses? Did certain sections of the reading stump you? Chapter 21 is difficult in some ways, for it speaks of future events: 1) Jesus declares circumstances that would take place a few decades, or sooner, after his death, and 2) he foretells of things that would happen right before his second coming. Prophecy can always be challenging to interpret. Nonetheless, Christ aimed to comfort and guide his disciples with his words. For more information on specific terms & verses, see our Digging Deeper section, where we will go into depth on Luke twenty-one.
4) Hymn: Here is the hymn, "Beautiful Savior." The lyrics are below if you'd like to read along :)

Beautiful Savior, King of creation,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Truly I'd love Thee, Truly I'd serve Thee,
Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.
Fair are the meadows, Fair are the woodlands,
Robed in flow'rs of blooming spring;
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,
He makes our sorr'wing spirit sing.
Fair is the sunshine, Fair is the moonlight,
Bright the sparkling stars on high;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels in the sky.
Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor, Praise, adoration
Now and forevermore be Thine!
Son of God and Son of Man!
Truly I'd love Thee, Truly I'd serve Thee,
Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.
Fair are the meadows, Fair are the woodlands,
Robed in flow'rs of blooming spring;
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,
He makes our sorr'wing spirit sing.
Fair is the sunshine, Fair is the moonlight,
Bright the sparkling stars on high;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels in the sky.
Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor, Praise, adoration
Now and forevermore be Thine!
5) Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the faith of the poor widow. Thank you for warning and guiding your disciples about the destruction of the temple. It was sad that the Romans invaded Jerusalem. Even so, thank you that your words came true--that you are a true prophet. When you come again, please help us to stand before you. We know your kingdom will be perfect, and we welcome you. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
Disclaimer: I should mention I do not have copyright permission regarding the particular Bible I'm using. I am reading an ESV edition in this recording. The majority of hymns I choose are in the public domain as this one is, and I reference the Lutheran Service Book a lot. I will be posting these devotions each Friday, throughout the year 2020. May they be a blessing to you. If you'd like to follow me and learn more about what I do, especially dance-wise, you can find me on Facebook, Instagram & YouTube. Enjoy the journey! Have a wonderful week. -Tessa
