Luke, Chapter 6
Welcome to week six of Luke/Acts 2020! Our structure is the same as week five: 1) I give an introduction to the reading, 2) there's a recording of me reading the chapter, 3) followed by questions & an explanation; 4) I'll post a hymn that you can read if you'd like, and 5) we'll close with a prayer. If you have a Bible, open it to Luke, chapter six. If not, you can find Luke chapter six online. Let's get started! And if you have questions or thoughts at the end, leave a comment or send me an email.
1) Introduction: Luke shares how Jesus came to preach about the kingdom of God in the different towns of the region (Luke 4:43). Chapter six continues to take us on that journey! Here we will travel with Jesus on the Sabbath to synagogues. We'll go up to a mountain with him, come back down, and hear what he has to say about how we should treat our neighbor.
2) Recording: Here is a recording of Luke, chapter six.

3) Explanation & Questions: What stood out to you from the reading? What are your favorite verses here, and why? Did certain words trouble or challenge you? It's perhaps hard to imagine how rigid the Pharisees were. Here again, we see how Jesus and his disciples were ruffling feathers. Even healing a person on the Sabbath infuriated some! Jesus ended up choosing his twelve apostles, and afterward, to a diverse crowd, he gave guidance. He intended his words to be heard and followed. For digging deeper, see my Google Doc that discusses specific verses and terms. Be sure to scroll down to chapter six.
4) Hymn: Here is a reading of the hymn "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less." The lyrics are below if you'd like to read them :)

My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
No merit of my own I claim But wholly lean on Jesus' name.
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace;
In ev'ry high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil.
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
His oath, His covenant and blood Support me in the raging flood;
When every earthly prop gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
When He shall come with trumpet sound, Oh, may I then in Him be found,
Clothed in His righteousness alone, Redeemed to stand before His throne!
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
No merit of my own I claim But wholly lean on Jesus' name.
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace;
In ev'ry high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil.
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
His oath, His covenant and blood Support me in the raging flood;
5) Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank you for being lord of the Sabbath, that no man-made regulations get in the way of your mercy. Thank you for healing the man's hand. His life must have significantly changed! We're glad that you carefully chose your apostles, and we thank you for your words of comfort and warning. Like the man with the withered hand, have mercy on our needs. Help us to know how to apply what you've said. In your name, Amen.
Disclaimer: I should mention I do not have copyright permission regarding the particular Bible I'm using. I am reading an ESV edition in this recording. The majority of hymns I choose are in the public domain as this one is, and I reference the Lutheran Service Book a lot. Have a wonderful week. -Tessa
