Luke, Chapter 6

Welcome to week six of Luke/Acts 2020. I'm so glad you're here! This week our structure is the same as Week Five: 1) I give an introduction to the reading. 2) There's a recording of me reading the chapter. 3) Followed by questions and an explanation. 4) I'll post a hymn that you can read. 5) And we'll close with a prayer. Easy-peasy. If you have a Bible, great. Open it to Luke, chapter six. If not, you can find Luke chapter six online. Let's get started!
1) Introduction: Luke shares with Theophilus how Jesus came to preach about the kingdom of God in the different towns of the region at that time (Luke 4:43). Chapter Six continues to take us on that journey! In it, we travel with Jesus on the Sabbath Day to a synagogue. We also go up on a mountain with him, come back down, and hear what he has to say to a large crowd of people.
2) Recording: Here's a recording of Luke, chapter six.

3) Explanation & Questions: What stood out to you from today's reading? What are your favorite verses here and why? Did certain words trouble or challenge you? I know that it's hard to imagine how strict the Pharisees were. After all, we didn't live at that time, and we've never been bound by the Old Testament law (unless we grew up Jewish). In Chapter Six, we again see how Jesus and his disciples ruffled feathers: Jesus healing a person on the Sabbath Day infuriated some! In this chapter, we also see how Jesus carefully chose his twelve apostles. After his apostolic appointment, he gave guidance to a diverse crowd of people, and he intended for his words to be heard and followed.

4) Hymn: Here's a reading of the hymn "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less." The lyrics are below if you'd like to read.

My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
No merit of my own I claim But wholly lean on Jesus' name.
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace;
In ev'ry high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil.
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
His oath, His covenant and blood Support me in the raging flood;
When every earthly prop gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
When He shall come with trumpet sound, Oh, may I then in Him be found,
Clothed in His righteousness alone, Redeemed to stand before His throne!
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
No merit of my own I claim But wholly lean on Jesus' name.
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.

5) Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for being lord of the Sabbath. Thank you that no man-made regulations can get in the way of your mercy for us. We thank you for healing the man's hand that Luke records in Chapter Six. Surely, his life must have significantly changed! We're grateful that you carefully chose your apostles, and we thank you for your words of comfort and warning in this chapter. Like the man with the withered hand, have mercy on us and help us to know how to apply what you've said because we know that your word matters and you care about it and us. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
Disclaimer: I should mention that I do not have copyright permission regarding the particular Bible I'm using. I'm reading an ESV edition in this recording. Most of the hymns I choose are in the public domain.
